To report a death, call (239) 277-5020 anytime day or night.
The following types of deaths must be reported to the District Medical
Examiner:
- By criminal violence of any type;
- By accident of any type, including delayed deaths and deaths
resulting from medical complications following an accident;
- By suicide;
- Suddenly while in apparent good health;
- Unattended by a practicing physician or other recognized practitioners*;
- In prison or penal institutions;
- In police custody;
- Under suspicious or unusual circumstances;
- By criminal abortion;
- By poison;
- By disease, injury or toxic agent resulting from employment;
- When a body is brought into the state without proper medical
certification;
- When a body is to be cremated, dissected or buried at sea;
- By disease constituting a threat to public health.
If a death falls outside of these circumstances the Medical Examiner will decline
jurisdiction.
